Pet hair on the couch: 4 effective methods to remove it

A cat napping on the sofa, a dog jumping onto the throw… and a few hours later, hair everywhere. Pet hair clings to fabrics because of its shape and static electricity: simply brushing it away isn’t enough. Here are the methods that really work, from the quickest to the most thorough, along with the techniques we use every day in cleaning.

Why pet hair sticks to the sofa

Pet hair is fine and slightly scaly: it gets trapped between the fabric fibers. Friction (when you sit down or the pet lies down) gives it a static charge, making it stick even more. That’s why you need a tool that grabs the hair rather than simply pushing it around.

Method 1: the electrostatic pet hair brush (the quickest)

This is the most practical method for everyday maintenance. The brush uses static electricity to attract hair and lint, with no adhesive to replace.

  1. Use the brush in short strokes, in one direction, over the area to be treated.
  2. Focus on the seams and corners, where hair accumulates.
  3. Empty the brush regularly by opening its reservoir to remove the collected hair.

It can also be used on clothing, bedding, and car seats. Our electrostatic pet hair brush is sold individually or in pairs, so you can keep one in the living room and one at the entrance.

Method 2: a slightly damp rubber glove

An effective trick using something you already have: put on a rubber cleaning glove, dampen it very slightly, and run your hand over the fabric. The hair will clump into small balls that are easy to pick up. Be careful: the fabric should not be wet, only lightly touched.

Method 3: the vacuum cleaner with the right brush

For a deep clean, the vacuum cleaner remains essential, but it cannot remove deeply embedded hair on its own. The correct order:

  1. First, loosen the hair with a pet hair brush or a glove.
  2. Then, vacuum it with the brush attachment or the special fabric attachment.
  3. Finish by using the crevice tool in the gaps between the seat and the backrest.

Method 4: under and behind the sofa

Hair doesn’t just stay on the cushions: it rolls under the sofa and forms dust bunnies. A telescopic duster with a flat head reaches where the vacuum cleaner cannot, and its microfiber covers are machine washable.

Good habits to limit hair

  • Brush your pet regularly, especially during shedding season (spring and autumn): that’s one less hair on the sofa.
  • Place a washable throw where your pet likes to go and wash it every week.
  • A quick pass every day is much more effective than a major cleaning once a month: the hair won’t have time to become embedded.
  • Always test on a discreet area before using a new tool on delicate fabric (velvet, linen, leather).

In summary

For everyday maintenance, an electrostatic pet hair brush is sufficient in most cases. Once a week, add a pass with the vacuum cleaner and a dusting under the sofa. Discover all our accessories in the Dusting and Floors collection, with free delivery on orders over €25.
